PLEIN-AIR WORKS

My plein-air paintings and drawings come from being out in the world, working directly from whatever landscape or street corner I land on. They’re quick studies in composition and structure, focusing on the tension between nature and the built environment.
I primarily paint with gouache, but have also known to use oils when I set up on a location. I also keep a separate sketchbook filled with pen and ink notes from my travels. A lot of these pieces come from the beach or coastal cities of every day scenery where power lines, rooftops and open sky intersect in interesting ways. I’m drawn to compositions where the natural landscape meets the human made one, and painting allows me to interact in real time. Some studies stay loose, others become more polished, but all of them help me create a dialogue about the world I see around me. This practice keeps my eye sharp and actually helps inform the way I approach my sculptures.
