Finalized in bronze with a black patina, this Cassowary sculpture leans into the animal’s weight, posture, and unmistakable prehistoric presence. Chuck is just what I’m calling him for now because he reminds me someone I knew from back in the day.

Cassowaries have a way of feeling like living dinosaurs, and this one was seriously into doing his own thing. In no way, was he interested in performing for anyone - especially me. His movements happened on his time, which were few and far between nap sessions behind foliage. The slow pace made it easy to settle into the walking pose I was able to capture and really work on perfecting the surface texture of the feathers and neck. Overall, the day was quiet and unremarkable in the best way- just another lazy afternoon at the zoo. Never had I felt like I was sculpting on a vacation than I did that day with this cassowary.
