Working with Marshall at the Los Angeles Zoo was a study in shifting attitudes — enthusiastic for a couple of days, then suddenly over my presence entirely. By the end of the week he’d roam past me with the slow confidence of someone who knew I was the one working around his schedule.
The pose comes from watching Marshall stretch upward to reach the hanging ‘browse’ in his enclosure, leaning into the movement with a surprising mix of power and balance. Most of the form was blocked in on-site during the summer heat, working between his wandering laps of the habitat and the shade I could chase down. Back in the studio, I tightened the surface and sharpened the smaller details before sending it to the foundry for casting and patina. The finished bronze keeps the personality of those days at the zoo — part determination, part attitude — shaped by the plein-air rhythm of working directly from life.
