This peacock was sculpted from life at the Los Angeles Zoo, capturing the personality of a very friendly model. The finished surface relies entirely on heat patination, allowing color to emerge naturally.
Kevin was quite the presence to work from- confident and fully aware of the space he occupied. The heat-only patina started off as an exploratory phase, especially in the feather train, where temperature and timing guided the shifts in hue. That openness for experimentation led to results I wouldn’t have arrived at through more conventional pathways. The piece is as much about observation and restraint as it is about surface and form. It was a rare project where instinct and experimentation aligned cleanly. Finishing it at the foundry truly felt less like problem solving and more like discovery.
