Sculpted plein-air style at the Los Angeles Zoo, this zebra came together over two sun soaked days with a very unwilling model. Deep, intentional trenches were carved into the form with the intent of catching the black and white stripes during the patina process.
Overall, this piece was a stubborn one, but kinda in the best way. The zebra rarely held still anywhere near where I was, and it forced me to respond intuitively rather than control every decision. I leaned into bold surface cuts early on, knowing the bronze patina would reward that daring move later on. It was one of those rare sessions at the zoo where everything clicked. The setting, the model, and the pace that I was working at, all of it helped me to refine my observation and working skills. And it’s become one of my personal favorites because of it.
